Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionHosta 'Blue Mouse Ears' is a miniature, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with smooth leaves that are blue with lighter coloured margins, and flowers that are white with pretty violet striping.
ID CharacteristicEye-catching raceme especially when in bud. Buds swell up like balloons before partially opening.
LandscapeMakes a nice addition to an ornamental or cottage garden or shady flower bed.
CultivationGrow in a sheltered location away from wind, in part to full shade, in moist, well-drained, humusy soil. Does best with some sun, in the morning or through trees. Once established plants have some tolerance to drought.
PestsSlugs and snails like to eat the foliage and can cause serious damage. Foliar nematodes may also feed on the leaves, causing browning between veins. Other less frequent problems are leaf spot and crown rot. Three viruses to watch for are: Hosta Virus X, tobacco rattle and tomato ring spot. Plants infected with any of these should be promptly removed and destroyed.
HabitatHorticultural origin.
Leaf DescriptionExtremely thick with an almost rubbery texture, heart-shaped, sharply pointed, rich blue-green to grey-green. The leaf blade measures 5 - 8 x 5 - 8 cm.
Flower DescriptionBell-shaped, white with pretty violet striping. Scape is thick, upright, pale green, up to 21 cm long.
