Acer platanoides 'Drumondii' (Harlequin Maple)

Michael's Opinion

A tree that has some redeeming qualities such as bloom and leaf colour. This is one of the more attractive cultivars that appears to set little seed. Occasionally a problem with reversion that is easily overcome if caught early and the offending branches are removed.

Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionAn attractive variegated form that is not as aggressive as other cultivars. It may revert on the odd branch, producing leaves with no variegation, where this occurs they should be promptly removed.
ID CharacteristicVariegated green and white/cream typical maple shaped leaves. The petiole when snapped exudes a white latex sap, one of the few maple species to do this.
ShapeLarge rounded crown.
LandscapeStreet, specimen and general landscape tree.
PropagationBudded onto A.platanoides understock.
CultivationEasy to grow in a variety of soil conditions.
PestsMaple tar spot which is temporarily disfiguring to the leaves but has little effect on plant vigour. Verticillium wilt, although often not fatal unless a tree is in poor vigour may also affect this tree. Of note here however is the ability of the tree to revert.
