OriginD. ecklonis was originally described by De Candolle in 1837 and is named after C.F. Ecklon, who was one of the first botanical explorers of the Cape region in South Africa. In the late 1800's it was introduced into cultivation in Europe and today is a very popular annual with new cultivars introduced each year. In the genus Dimorphotheca, there are about 19 species occurring in southern Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe.
