HabitatHonshu and Hokkaido islands in mountain forests at an altitude of approximately 1,400-2,500 m.
Bark/Stem DescriptionPurple or reddish bark with faint white stripes and glabrous branchlets.

Leaf Description5-7 lobes, tufts of reddish-brown hairs at the vein axils and a cordate base, 5-10 x 4-6 cm. Leaves turn a vibrant red to yellow in autumn.
Flower Description6-10 yellow flowers grouped on racemes, 10 cm in length.
