Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionThis species has been placed on the IUCN Red List as vulnerable however, it is considered less threatened in Guatemala and considered endangered in Panama.
CultivationAcidic, loamy soils.
HabitatMontane forests at an altitude of 1,500-3,200 m.
Bark/Stem DescriptionExfoliates in vertical plates, 3-4 x 12-15 cm, leaving a grey interior with glabrescent striated twigs.
Flower/Leaf Bud DescriptionOvoid, 4-6 x 2-3 cm.
Leaf DescriptionElliptic or oboval, thick, 10-16 secondary veins on either side of the midvein, a cordate and asymmetrical base, dark green and glabrous with tufts of hairs along the underside vein axils, 9-17 x 3.5-5.5 cm.
Flower DescriptionMale inflorescence 4-16 cm, yellow in colour. Female bears 2-6 flowers, 4-6 cm.
Fruit DescriptionAcorn, obtuse, solitary or in groups of 2-3, 1.5-2 cm, matures in June through July and October.
