Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionA unique, different and popular palm that should be part of any palm collection, providing you don't get cold. Its fusiform trunk, silver unique crown shaft, and somewhat short leaves make it a very nice landscape palm.
PropagationFrom seed; germinate in vitro in gelatin, agar or other medium. Seed may take several months to germinate and only fresh seed should be used.
Leaf DescriptionPinnate, reduplicate, strongly arched, to 2 m long, with leaflets evenly spaced along the rachis and held in several planes for a plumose appearance. Upper leaf surface is green and lower is gray-green; the midrib is prominent.
Flower DescriptionInflorescences are erect in bud, to 1 m long, with several horn-shaped buds circling the base of the waxy green crown shaft, densely branched with male and female flowers on the same inflorescence.
Fruit DescriptionThe 2.5 cm long oval fruits which follow the flowers look like strands of purple beads.
