Origin A sport from a pink flowered form A x hybrida 'Elegans'; Verdun France, 1860. The plant for the most part sterile was reported to set seed in in northwest Ireland in 1886 at Ashford Castle. Ashford Castle was the seat of the Guinness family and where head gardener Andrew Campbell selected three plants from the several dozen seedling raised and named them after the Ashford's; the seedlings were named 'Lady Ardilaun' and 'Lord Ardiluan' after Lord Guinness was awarded the title of Baron of Ardiluan in 1880.

Description and Growing Information

ID CharacteristicStems are generally held at a 60� angle to the main stems.
LandscapeWell suited for an autumn border or woodland garden.
PropagationRoot cuttings collected in the autumn and cut into 5 cm lengths and placed horizontally in flats barley covering the top. Water and place in a cold frame until growth appears and then pot individually.
CultivationPlants prefer a rich, moist site, spreading to form a patch. Good for part shade. Use a winter mulch in colder regions, particularly if planting in the fall. Easily divided in early spring. May need to be staked towards late summer.
PestsSusceptible to Botrytis cinerea, scabious bud eelworm (Aphelenchoides blastophthorus), root lesion eelworm (Pratylenchus spp.), symphilids, powdery mildew, plum rust (Tranzschelia discolor), anemone and cucumber mosaic viruses, downy mildew (Peronspora spp.), anemone smut (Urocystis anemones), and flea beetle (Phyllotetra spp.).

Flower DescriptionLarge, white single blossoms with a double row of petals, offset by a green center surrounded by a bright yellow corolla . Blooms are held on tall stems with 6 -10, but usually 6 - 9 tepals, with flowers generally lacking in fertile pollen.
