Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionS. japonica is an upright deciduous shrub growing to approximately 2 m tall and 2 m wide. During the midsummer the flattened headed flowers bloom in large clusters of bright pink.
ShapeUpright, bushy.
PropagationS. japonica should be propagated during the spring via semi-ripe or softwood cuttings. Additionally, propagation by hardwood cuttings is viable but should be done during the winter.
CultivationS. japonica prefers full sun but is tolerant of partial shade. It prefers plenty of water during the growing season though caution should be taken as it cannot tolerate saturated soils for extended periods of time. It prefers a rich, moist loam, but it can grow in a wide variety of soils, including those on the alkaline side.
