Origin | The genus Magnolia is named after Pierre Magnol, a French botanist who lived from 1638 to 1715. In 1820, a retired soldier of Napoleons army and the Director of The French Royal Institute, Etienne Soulange-Bodin, crossed Magnolia denudata with Magnolia liliiflora. The cross then made its way to England and across Europe and eventually to North America, spreading fast due to its beautiful tea cup shaped flowers and aesthetic appeal. |
