Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionIris germanica is perhaps the most familiar of its Genus. It is a herbaceous perennial with blooms on long stems.
LandscapeMakes a very reliable garden flower: use in sunny beds and borders. Good for a cut flower garden.
CultivationEasily grown in full sun, in moderately moist, well-drained, humusy soil. Drought tolerant. Do not plant rhizomes too deep, plant in full shade or over fertilize as these things may prevent or inhibit flowering.
PestsSusceptible to iris borer. Diseases include: crown rot fungus, bacterial soft rot and fungal leaf spot. Mosaic virus may also be an issue: look out for blotchy flowers and leaves.
Leaf DescriptionSword-shaped, linear, mostly at the base, in two ranks, about 0.5 m long.
Flower DescriptionLarge, showy and fragrant. Six perianth segments: three purple falls (outer petals) with brown veins, white bases and yellow beards and three lilac standards (inner, upright petals). Cultivars come in a wide variety of colours.
