Description and Growing Information

PropagationEasily grown by seed in a variety of mixed colours or cultivars, sow outside in May or under glass in June and July, when large enough transplant into the garden. In Europe bunches of plants can often be purchased bare root or as 'typical' bedding plants in pots or packs.
CultivationPlants will grow in thin, stony, lime soils in crevices in full sun but the soils must be well-drained and of moderate fertility; excess nutrition will cause excessive growth and 'lanky' plants. Plants may be sold as a biennial in milder climates and require a cold period to set growth (verbalization), however, today most cultivars will flower in the year they are sown.
HabitatAn introduced plant that has naturalized and is found growing on dry places such as walls, old buildings and banks.
Flower DescriptionVariable in colour but mostly yellow, red and orange. A cultivar 'Sunset Pink' will be released in 2013.
Colour DescriptionVariable in colour but mostly yellow and orange.
