| Origin | Linnaeus first described the genus Stapelia in 1737 and named it in honour of Johannes van Stapel who was a 17th century botanist and physician. Found in sparse but broadly distributed populations in the Great Karoo, Free State and southwards to Port Elizabeth, however it occurs predominantly in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. It is closely related to Stapelia hirsute. |

Description and Growing Information
| Bark/Stem Description | The stems have prominent teeth and join each other at compressed angles. |
| Flower Description | The flowers are up to 150 mm in diameter and are a dark muddy purple-brown with the tips of the segments a darker colour than the main bloom. The flower disc has long purple hairs while the lower parts of the lobes are ciliate with simple, long, white hairs. |
