Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionPerennial, with a woody base and stems that are procumbent and often roots if conditions are suitable. The stems are stiff, well branched and erect.
HabitatTolerant of a wide variety of conditions, including saline soils, sand, disturbed ground and roadsides.
Leaf DescriptionThe leaf size can be quite variable depending on the growing conditions and the availability of water. The, alternating leaves may be found with or without a short stalk, are oblong, silver grey in colour and may range in size from 2 mm to 1 cm in length. Leaf drop may occur at plant maturity and prior to dormancy.
Flower DescriptionThe 1 - 3 crimson flowers originate from the leaf nodes along the stems and thorny branches. The upper petal of 1 - 1.5 cm long flowers has a pronounced curl inwards, while the 5 - toothed calyx is bell shaped.
Fruit DescriptionThe pod may be straight or curved, 5 mm x 2 -4 cm long and has a slight curl towards itself and is constricted around the seeds. There may be from 3 - 8 bean-shaped seeds that are smooth and brown in colour. The plant goes dormant after fruiting.
