OriginIntroduced in 1982 by Peter Beales (UK), it is named after the well-known British actor. A cross between 'Scharlachglut' (Scarlet Fire) and Tuscany Superb. Gallicas are an old class of garden rose popular in the 1800s.

General DescriptionRosa 'James Mason' is a hybrid Gallica rose (G) whose semi-double blooms have rich crimson petals and distinctly golden coloured anthers.
ID CharacteristicGallica roses are compact and prickly with dull green leaves. This particular cultivar is larger than most Gallicas.

Leaf DescriptionLight to medium green with serrated margins, odd pinnate (leaflets arranged in rows with one at the tip).
Flower DescriptionSemi-double, up to 13 cm in diameter, petals are deeply crimson, anthers are bright yellow, clustered in groups of three, fragrant. Bloom once a year, mid-summer.
