This specimen is a highly valued ornamental evergreen. Even young plants exude bright pink flowers. Be sure to provide acidic well drained soil and protection from the wind. This plant is primarily used as a border planting or an accent specimen.

Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionThis dwarf, broad leaved evergreen retains its dark green colour year round. There are bright pink flowers on even the youngest specimens; leathery feeling on the topside of leaf.
ID CharacteristicDark green leaves, coarse foliage, dark pink flowers emerge in mid May even on young plants.
ShapeDwarf, upright form, almost pyramidal, with a medium growth rate.
LandscapePrimarily used for borders planted in groupings or masses, however if a garden is designed properly it can be used as either a focal point or an accent.
PropagationCuttings have a moderately high success rate when cut in late summer to early autumn; however tissue culture is primarily used for the Haaga Rhododendron because it is a cultivar.
CultivationPlace in partial shade with little to no wind, soil must be loamy and acidic. If the soil has poor drainage root rot may occur. Be sure to supercharge before winter and protect from snow build up. Mulch around the planting site.

Bark/Stem DescriptionSmooth grey texture year round
Flower/Leaf Bud DescriptionVegetative buds are .5 cm long, pointed, scaly, yellowish green colour in early spring. Flower buds are 2-4 cm and are light pink.
Leaf DescriptionAlternate, simple, broad leaved evergreen. Leaves are 7.5 cm long and 5 cm wide, while the petiole is 3.5-5cm long. Foliage is slightly aromatic when bruised.
Flower DescriptionDark pink flowers, 3.5-6 cm long and .5-1.5 cm wide. Flowers in mid-May to early June.
Fruit DescriptionDehiscent 5-valved capsule. It is recommended that it be removed after flowers have died. Fruits are light green colour and measure 2-4cm in size.
Colour DescriptionDark green leaves year round, bark is a smooth grey colour.
