Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionA very tall, evergreen coniferous tree with a dense, conic crown, strongly aromatic shoots and bright green leaves that have dull white stomatal bands beneath.
ShapeDense, conic crowns.
LandscapeSpecimen tree for parks or large gardens.
PropagationPropagate by grafting (although obtaining a lead shoot can be difficult).
CultivationGrow in full sun in moisture retentive soil.
PestsAdelges cooleyi may cause unsightly white fluffs of wax, but doesn't affect the health of the tree.
HabitatHorticultural origin.
Bark/Stem DescriptionYoung trees have thin, green-brown bark with resin blisters. As the tree ages, the bark changes colour to purple, finally becoming red-brown, much thicker, corky, and deeply fissured. Branches are usually level or gently downswept with drooping branchlets. The shoots are very aromatic, green-brown and thinly pubescent.
Leaf DescriptionLeaves to 1.5-3 cm in length, bright green above with two dull stomatal bands beneath and a blunt, rounded apex.
Flower DescriptionGreen, cylindrical cone to 6-11.5 x 2 cm that opens to x 4 cm and changes colour to a pale brown. The scales are thinly woody, to 2.5 cm in width, and are evenly sized along the entire cone.
Fruit DescriptionSeed is up to 7 mm in length, with a wing to 11 mm.
