General DescriptionFlattened dark evergreen needles, generally spreading. A slow-growing, but vigorous shrub.
ID CharacteristicRed arial covering seed, scaly bark, blunt bud scales, broadly pryamidal, small tree or large shrub.
ShapeBroad pyramidal small tree or large shrub; spreading.
PropagationFrom soft wood cuttings in June.
CultivationPropagated almost exclusively by rooting stem cuttings, although seeds are an alternative.
PestsDieback, mites, root rot, weevils while eriophyid mites in buds can cause deformed new growth
HabitatPerfers moist, sandy, slightly acidic soil in full sun or partial shade.
Bark/Stem DescriptionScaly, flaky brown bark, usually hidden by foliage.
Leaf DescriptionNeedle like leaves, dark green colour on the upper side, light green on the under side, needles can be straight or slightly curved.
Flower DescriptionDioecious, flowers form on previous years wood, blooms in March and April.
Fruit DescriptionOvoid-oblong seed about 8 mm long, partially enveloped by a fleshy cup-shaped disk that is red and called an arial.
