General DescriptionThis species is considered to be locally threatened in Japan and has been placed on the IUCN Red List as least concern.
HabitatForests, dry or moist slopes and rocks on mountain summits at an altitude of 400-1,30 m.
Bark/Stem DescriptionFissured, blackish-brown with glabrous reddish-brown or dark brown branches.
Leaf Descriptionovate, broadly ovate or elliptic, with 6-8 lateral veins on either side, 4-8 x 3.5-5 cm.
Flower DescriptionOblong female inflorescence.
Fruit DescriptionBroad elliptic and glabrous nutlet with wings 1/2 its length, produced July through August.
Texture DescriptionHard and dense.
