General DescriptionThis shrub has been placed on the IUCN Red List as least concern.
Notable SpecimensThe University of Alberta Botanic Garden, Devon, Alberta, Canada.
HabitatForests, stream banks and swamps at an elevation of 600-1,100 m.
Bark/Stem DescriptionGlabrous branches.
Leaf DescriptionOvate or ovate elliptic with 5-8 lateral veins on either side. 1.5 - 3 long and 1 - 2 cm wide. The petiole is 2 - 10 mm long. The bracts are ciliate, 4 - 7 mm long and have elliptic nutlets.
Flower DescriptionThe penduncle is 2 - 5 mm long but can sometimes be 10 mm. Female species have oblong inflorescence which is erect. The flowers bloom from June to July.
Fruit DescriptionElliptic nutlet with wings half of its width and are produced July through August.
Colour DescriptionThe branches are purplish-brown and greyish-brown in colour.
