Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionMat forming shrub, widely spreading with larger dark green terminal joints which vigorously grow upwards. Spines are found at the upper part of the joint. This species is striking with its large white mats.
CultivationSandy soils.
HabitatGrassland valleys and high plains at an altitude of 1,800-2,400 m.
Leaf DescriptionSpines are straight and daggerlike and intertwined, white in colour, 10-20 per areole, 2.5 cm x 2 mm.
Flower DescriptionBright yellow flowers, sepaloids a greenish-yellow with the style and stigma lobes white, 3-5x5-6 cm.
Fruit DescriptionEllipsoid, spineless, smooth and fleshy, yellow in colour, 4 x 1.9-2.2 cm.
