General DescriptionThis species has been placed on the IUCN Red List as least concern.
HabitatMountain forests at an altitude of 2,500-4,000 m.
Bark/Stem DescriptionFissured into square plates, dark grey.
Flower/Leaf Bud DescriptionConical, 3-6 mm in length.
Leaf DescriptionOval with a pointed or obtuse apex and a cordate base, dark green with a hairy, golden underside and 7-12 secondary veins on either side of the midvein.
Flower DescriptionYellow male catkins, 5-12 cm in length and pistillate inflorescences, 2-7 cm.
Fruit DescriptionAcorn, globbose and glabous black in colour when mature, 1.8-2.5 cm in diameter.
