Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionA trunkless palm, with enormous spear shaped, entire leaves up to 3 metres long, and up to 2 metres wide. The underside is covered in fine white hairs which give it a silvery appearance.
LandscapeIt is suitable for growing in parks in shaded areas for its beautiful form and attractive diamond shaped leaves.
PropagationBy seed.

HabitatIt grows on steep slopes of ridges of lowland rainforests in Peninsular Malaysia.
Leaf DescriptionSimple, broadly diamond shape, with jagged leaf margins on the upper half, up to 3 m long and 2 m wide. The undersurface of the leaves are covered with white hairs which give them a silvery or grey colour. Its petioles are short, with two conspicuous yellow stripes on the underside, and are coarsely toothed along the edge.
Flower DescriptionSmall, white flowers on a low and short inflorescence.
Fruit DescriptionRound, about 4 cm across, ripening brown in colour.
